Tobi – Joel Roman
Album: Millennium In Darkness
Genre: Thrash/Groove-Metal | Southern Rock Crossover
First of all, I want to ask you, how are you and your bandmates doing right now?
Hi Tobi!!! On our behalf, first and foremost, we like to thank you for the amazing job you are doing for the Wheelchair/ Physical disabilities community in Rock and Metal, we think your job is an outstanding example of the real passion and love we Metalheads have, for our music, our scene and specially with each other as the worldwide brotherhood we truly are!!! As for us we’re doing good, working a lot and really excited about the album release!!!
Please introduce yourself and your Colleagues form LEFT-ÖVR to me and my Followers, to know you a littlebit better!
Well, I’m Joel Roman, a BBQ Pitmaster and a Blues maniac. Edgardo Ruiz, an accountant and a guitar obsessed genius. Edwin Rosa, a brilliant multi talented musician and sound engineer, also a great fisherman! Last but definitely not least, Brando Collazo, a Metal maniac, with a passion for planes and a master fisherman!
How about your Line-Up? Who is who @ LEFT-ÖVR?
Brando Collazo: Bass/ Vocals
Edgardo Ruiz: Guitar
Edwin Rosa: Drums
Joel Roman: Guirar/ Vocals
Please tell me how to say and write your bandname. On different Sites there are different types of writing the Bandname. Is it Left-övR or LEFT-ÖVR?
There’s no right or wrong there, but the we tend to go for LEFT-ÖVR.
Whats behind your bandname? There is a deeper meaning behind it, i read latley.
Well, just as the name implies, we are the remaining members of two local bands, which sadly had to breakup because of the passing of their founding members. We are the ones who were left over by our brothers.
I’m sorry for your loss!
I appreciate it, thanks.
„Millenium In Darkness“ is your Debütalbum?
Yes, after two years of intense work and extreme difficulties, we have our first!!!
What can Metalheads expect from your Album „Millenium In Darkness“?
What we put ourselves to the task, was to provide the experience of a good record as a „whole“ . An 8 song album, that’s direct, straight to the gut, no nonsense or over produced, that will have intense moments as well as time to breathe, that has feeling, but some chaos too!
Your first Single was „Not For The Masses“. Are there more singles to come?
Yes! Our next single and (hopefully ) video, will be „Gator Season „ , which goes deeper within our Southern, swampier, Blues Metal sound…Banjo and all!!!
Can you please tell me a little about each Song in one sentence?
„Not For The Masses“
Our middle finger to the modern music industry and mass media market , and our ode to the Metal community who still to this day, know how to keep it real!
„Millennium In Darkness“
A song to reflect about current times and events… conspiracy theories…or truth to be heard?
As heavy as truth! We all believe in something, but everyone‘s life should be respected and treated as sacred, no matter what you believe.
„Turning The Pages“
A tribute to all our loved ones who parted ways with this world, specially my Dad, for whom I wrote this song. Music heals.
„Power Of My Own“
Hurricane Maria, destroyed our homes, land and many lives…but not our will!
„The South Won“
Written in the late 90’s , as relevant today as it was back then…ALL LIVES MATTER!
A swampy ride trough the murky waters of fraud…them gators are everywhere and you know ‚em well!
Like the ending of an old western movie, where the outlaws ride to the sunset…or meet the maker guns a‘blazing!
„Glory Road“ totally triggers me and i mea nto hear Guns n Roses – but in Left-övR Style. Did they inspired you?
Oh Hell yeah, they surely do! GNR is probably one of the last great institutions of Rock and Roll (obviously not Metal), like AC/DC and The Stones before them, and a huge part of our musical DNA, so yeah, in a way, they are part of our sound and I’m glad to know, that you as the listener, could relate and know us a bit better, just by hearing our influences trough our music. Isn’t that cool?
What can we expect from „LEFT-ÖVR“ in the near future?
We are a „Meat and Potatoes“, working class band, so we know how to work ‚till we drop! We want to keep on going, trying, fighting for what we believe in, and we believe in the Power of the Fans, our audience, you have the Power to make us succeed, to make us work harder, to give it all, we owe you that…and will keep on doing it!!!
Do you have a fav Song on your upcoming Release?
That’s always a hard question to answer, ‚cause you love them all and each one is special in some unique way, but in terms of an overall, I believe „Millennium in Darkness „ not only turned out to be the title track, but was the first song we wrote together as a band, and that makes it even more special.
In which Formats will „Millenium In Darkness“ come to us Metalheads?
You may not know this, but, we released the „physical „ version of the album for our local and beloved Puerto Rican Metal scene earlier this year, which sold out completely in a matter of just 2 weeks (yep, now a collector’s item, lol!). Now we’re more than thrilled to have Germany and the rest of the world join the party on November 5th, through all available digital platforms… talking ‚bout convenience huh!!!
How about playing live in Puerto Rico? Are there any plans to play across Europe?
Due to the actual crazy Covid times we’re living, at least locally, live shows have become more of a rarity, almost every time we think it’s ok to go on the road again, a new outbreak happens and shows get cancelled, but believe me, if there’s any chance for us to go and visit our Metal brothers in Europe, THAT will be for us, the ultimate experience and lifelong dream come true, specially if it’s one of the many amazing festivals you guys have there, we’re dying to!!!
How big is the Metal Community in your country?
Well, just like Puerto Rico, an Island that is just 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, our scene is small, but fierce and passionate, and everybody knows each other, sadly for us, we don’t have too many „original“ Rock or Metal venues, and the very few that exists, only can handle so much, specially with the new regulations, and, obviously, we’re nothing but outcasts or simply a joke to the local media (that’s why, „Not for the Masses“, but still…we’re here no matter what!!!
What was the best Album released in 2021 so far in your opinion? – except yours!
Many thanks for that, I take it haha!!!! Well in terms of general Rock per se, I believe, MammothWVH as well as Kotzen and Smith’s album, both were very refreshing and to an extent unexpected.
And what was the best Heavy Metal Album released in 2021 so far in your opinion?
For Metal my go to’s of the year have been Iron Maiden and Gojira.
What Band or Musiscian did influenced you most in your musicial live?
For me I know for sure is Jimi Hendrix haha, but this band has so many influences, from classic Thrash, to Punk, Southern Rock, Delta Blues and Country, Death Metal you name it! We are a Rock and Roll melting pot really!!!
Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?
Fishing, Barbecue, Vinyls, Retro Arcade gaming, beer and Whiskey!
If you got one wish…
WACKEN OPEN AIR
A few words to your Fans out there in Germany and all the Others in the World?
Thanks for being the fuel to our engine, for inspiring us, for making us work harder and play louder, for keeping our heads in the clouds but our feet on the ground. From our hearts to yours…THANK YOU, and hope we get to meet ya soon!!!
Thanks for the interview, Joel from LEFT-ÖVR. Many greetings to all from the Band. Something that is important to me: Stay healthy and be safe!
Our pleasure Tobias, keep up the amazing job you are doing!!! – I will 😉 so are you!
