Band: Catalyst Crime
Album: Catalyst Crime
Genre: Cinematic Symphonic Metal
Label: Massacre Records
Release: 22.10.2021

Die Band rekrutierte auch einige bemerkenswerte Gastmusiker für ihr Debüt:
Jake E (CyHra, ex-Amaranthe), Bill Hudson (I Am Morbid, NorthTale), Harri Hytönen (Kalmah, Hammerhed), Micki Richter (Atrocity, Leaves‘ Eyes) sowie Thorsten „Tosso“ Bauer (Atrocity, Leaves‘ Eyes). Alexander Krull hat das Album produziert, gemischt und gemastert. Krull und CATALYST CRIME werden erneut aufeinandertreffen, da CATALYST CRIME im Oktober/November 2021 Leaves‘ Eyes auf ihrer „The Last Viking – Europe 2021“ Tour unterstützen werden. Doch heute habe ich die Sängerin Zoë Marie Federoff im Gespräch über das Debütalbum und freue mich es euch präsentieren zu dürfen!

Hello Zoë from Catalyst Crime. My name is Tobi. I run a Facebook page and a webblog. On this page I post reviews of current albums, interviews, band presentations and reports about concerts that I visit with my wheelchair. On the one hand, to tell other wheelchair users how the venue is equipped in terms of accessibility and on the other hand, how to best proceed to get tickets, which is usually not possible with conventional ticket portals.

A: That’s really cool!

In the future I will also write about hygiene measures, as this is important for me as a high-risk patient and for my readers too. Of course, I also write about the bands‘ performance. Today I have a few questions for you about your new Album „Catalyst Crime“.

Tobi – Metal and Me

„Zoë Marie“ – Catalyst Crime

First of all, I want to ask you, how are you and your Bandmates doing right now?

A: Hi there, all things considered we are doing well, thank you.

Please introduce yourself and your Bandmembers to me and my Followers a little!

A: My name is Zoë, I’m the vocalist, and I’m joined by Gerit Lamm on drums, Jonah Weingarten on keys and orchestration, Kaelen Sarakinis and Chena Ohanele on guitars, and Matt Federoff on bass.

What can Metalheads expect from your Debutalbum „Catalyst Crime“?

A: Symphonic metal with a lot of genre crossover with death metal and progressive metal. Lyrically we worked to cover a wide array of topics and emotions and the whole album is marked by cinematic-style orchestrations. There’s a lot going on.

About what is the Story of the Debutalbum „Catalyst Crime“?

A: We prefer to leave possibly storyline interpretations up to the listener, so they can perhaps see their own life stories through a different lens.

How was ist to make a Album in times of Corona? I know from your Socials that travelling to Europe and meet with others wasn’t easy in the past.

A: We actually got really lucky- we finished this album right before Corona. Recording was completed in autumn of 2019 and production was finished by winter. Waiting through the pandemic to release it was very difficult, but of course many other bands have been in the same position as us.

Your first Single was „Condemn Me To Chaos“ was a really nice one. Are there more to come?

A: Thank you. Yes, we have another single coming out very soon.

CATALYST CRIME – Condemn Me To Chaos (Official Video)

Can you please tell me a little about a few selected Songs in one sentence?

„Mother Dearest“
„Chasing The Ghost“
„Nowhere Near Dead Yet“
„Without Anesthesia“

A: Mother Dearest is one of my personal favorites on the album, it’s clearly the heaviest as it’s a straight up symphonic death metal song. I really want to do more songs like this on the next album, because there’s a whole series of emotions and thoughts that you can express better with harsh vocals.

Chasing The Ghost is a ballad and one of the last songs written for the album. I think Jonah’s orchestrations get some well deserved time in the spotlight, and they create a melancholy, reflective mood that slows the whole album down for a singularly sad moment. It’s probably the only song I would characterize as projecting actual sadness.

Nowhere Near Dead Yet was one of the first songs we wrote for this album and was originally created by guitarist Kaelen Sarakinis and myself. It’s actually a funny story- he wrote guitar parts and I wrote vocal parts independently that matched up perfectly when we brought our ideas to each other. Very shocking but it worked great.

Without Anesthesia deals with the topic of emotional healing, how it hurts and it’s not a pretty or glorious process. People picture healing or resurrection like it’s some triumphant event, instead of a gritty, nasty process. In reality it’s like life-saving surgery without anesthesia.

Who sing the guttural Vocals on „Projection Of My Mind“ and „Mother Dearest“?

A: I sing all vocals, both clean and harsh.

How was it to sing this Duett with Jake E in „Cognitive Dissonance“?

A: Really a wonderful experience, Jake is such a talented vocalist and performer. I think he suits the song perfectly.

What can we expect from „Catalyst Crime“ in the near future?

A: We are going to head in more directions on our next album, which is already in the works. More death metal, more progressive metal, maybe even some black metal and other influences will find their way in at the rate we’re going. And that’s good. We don’t want to be defined simply as symphonic metal.

Do you have a fav Song on your upcoming Album?

A: Mother Dearest, Cognitive Dissonance, and Projection of my Mind are my personal favorites.

In which Formats will „Catalyst Crime“ come to us Metalheads?

A: Right now digital and digipak options are available. I can’t say what will happen with a vinyl option right now as there’s a worldwide supply chain issue with vinyl that’s affecting a lot of bands. Another byproduct of the pandemic.

I know you are on tour with Leave’s Eyes – i have a Ticket for Weinheim in Germany 😊 do you think it will be played?

A: I really cannot say. I do know that if the tour is delayed because of COVID, new dates will be announced at a future point. So we will see you eventually, once it’s safe.

As a musician, when you think about live music, when and how it can take place again, do you also think about how things are with hygiene and your own safety?

A: Of course we all miss live music terribly but it’s important to make sure it can be safely performed. I lost family members to COVID. I am anxious to get back on stage but I also don’t want to rush into it before it’s safe for the communities we are hoping to visit.

And how about the security of the fans in the interior who are close together. Do you also worry about their safety, with regard to Covid19?

A: Once everyone who is able to get vaccinated is vaccinated, I will worry a lot less. Almost half the world is vaccinated now. People should stop waiting and get their shot.

If you could choose a Festival to play with Catalyst Crime, which would you choose and why?

A: There’s a lot of festivals we want to play, but I really am hoping for Summer Breeze and John Smith Rock Festival soon. I’m sure everyone in the band would have answers ranging from ProgPower to Hellfest haha. But I don’t think Hellfest has room for any more bands next year, they already have every other band on earth.

Is Heavy Metal and the Subgenres also a means for you to switch off everything in this hectic world, to Pause and just listen?

A: Thank goodness for music during times like these. I’m sure there are several albums I can thank for helping me maintain my sanity.

What was the best Album released in 2021 so far in your opinion?

A: That’s a tough one. I have two big favorites right now, Silver Lake by Esa Holopainen and Judas by Lord of the Lost. Both are absolutely stunning albums.

What Band or Musiscian did influenced you most in your musicial live?

A: A lot of musicians have actually, that list is too long to name. It definitely includes the staple pioneers like Simone Simons and Floor Jansen but it would also include non metal acts like Marko Saaresto from Poets of the Fall.

What would you say if i compare Catalyst Crime to Nightwish in „Chasing The Ghost“ for example?

A: I understand every symphonic metal band in the world right now is still compared to Nightwish, and that makes sense since they helped to establish the genre. But we’re not trying to be Nightwish. Nightwish is the best at being Nightwish. We’re Catalyst Crime.

Which Album was your first Metal Album bought of your own money, and why?

A: Two actually! When I was 12 or 13 I bought my first two CDs with my own money. They were Century Child by Nightwish and Vineland Saga by Leaves’ Eyes.

Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?

A: I hike a lot, we have amazing mountains and parks in Arizona. I also enjoy watercolor painting, reading, cooking, horseback riding, and most of all raising my beautiful daughter.

If you got one wish…

A: If I tell it, it won’t come true. 🙂

A few words to your Fans out there in Germany and all the Others in the World?

A: Thank you all so much for making this long wait worth it. We love your responses so far to our new music and we can’t wait for you to hear the entire album. Until we see you on the road, be safe!

Thanks for the interview Zoë. Many greetings to all from the Band. Something that is important to me: Stay healthy and be safe!

A: You as well Tobias!
