ATRÆ BILIS – Lore Beyond Bone (From ‚Apexapien‘ LP, 2021)

First of all, I want to ask you, how are you doing right now?

AB: Doing well, thank you.

Would you please tell my followers about „Atrae Bilis“ and introduce you plus the Musicians behind the Band?

AB: Atræ Bilis is a death metal collective based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Formed in 2018, our first release was a 6-song EP “Divinihility” that came out on Transcending Obscurity Records in 2020. We are currently signed with 20 Buck Spin and have a debut full-length record scheduled for release on October 8th, 2021. Title of this LP is “Apexapien” and consists of 8 tracks. Band is Jordan (v), David (g), Luka (d) and Brendan (b).

How happy are you that the album will be released on 8th of October and the world can hear your debut album?

AB: We are really stoked for people to check out this record.

In which genre can we put your kind of Death Metal?

AB: Whichever! There are enough elements in it to classify it this or that, but we prefer to leave that to the listeners.

How about the times you were working on „Apexapien“? And how can one man put out such awesome guttural Vocals in this deep wide range?

AB: You’ll have to ask Jordan, our vocalist, all I can say is it surpassed our expectations. We are definitely pleased with how it all turned out and Jordan’s voice couldn’t compliment the music more.

What can Metalheads expect from your first longplayer?

AB: Roughly a bit more than 30 minutes of sonic Death, we like to keep our songs tight and deadly. We love the fact that our music easily transitions from the way we practice it in our jam space to the way it’s being recorded. A feeling of a live band, just one big cohesive piece and hopefully that’s exactly what everyone will come to expect of the band on this and every other album in the future as well.

If you compare Atrae Bilis with other Bands in your Genre, which Band is coming close to your Sound?

AB: We don’t really compare ourselves to anyone, our music can be weird sometimes. We’ll occasionally come up with something that will remind us of this or that band, which is inevitable since the influences are abundant and we are proud to stand on the shoulders of giants. People have likened our sound or moments therein to those of Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Suffocation, Wormed, Ulcerate et al. We do love all these groups, so it is definitely considered a compliment.

„Lore Beyond Bone“ was the first Single you released so far and „Bacterium Abloom“ the second. Will there one or two more to come?

AB: There’s a couple of more surprises on the way, all will be revealed soon.

ATRÆ BILIS – Bacterium Abloom (From ‚Apexapien‘ LP, 2021)

Could you tell my Followers in a short sentence about each Song and what you wanna tell Mankind in
every Song?

AB: Album is a concept narrative, but I don’t want to reveal anything until the record is out.

„Into The Seas Of Sepsis“ and „Hymn Of The Flies“ are my favourite songs so far. How about you? Got a fav?

AB: Hm, I really love how we came up with the introductory song, it has elements of everything that I love about our sound. And how it transitions into ‘Lore Beyond Bone’; that’s a really cool moment. ‘Hymn of the Flies’ is sick, one of the weirder songs on this LP and probably David’s favourite haha. Closing track is an absolute riff fest which we loved arranging and piecing together. All songs turned out insanely well in the mix, I think. I’m keen to hear what other people think, nevermind me.

Can you tour with this album in Canada or is Covid19 still fucking everyone up?

AB: Still early to tell, but we’re definitely anxious to get it out on the road. We don’t have anything definitely planned at the moment.

How are your plans for the near future of „Atrae Bilis“?

AB: Patiently awaiting the arrival of APEXAPIEN and everyone receiving their copies of the record, then touring and promoting it. We’re always writing, too, so that’s something we always look forward to. The Bilis syndrome is that of an ever-evolving musical entity.

If you could choose a festival to play with „Atrae Bilis“, which would you choose and why?

AB: Any at the moment, to be honest. Deathfests in North America seem like a good spot for Atræ Bilis, such as the one in Maryland or Quebec. Total Death over Mexico would be considered a privilege, too. Europe and abroad would be stellar, Metaldays, Brutal Assault, Damnation, Alcatraz etc.

How much energy do you need for one Show with this absolute high energy and thundering kind of Death Metal?

AB: Presumably a lot. We’ve played one live show so far, here in our hometown of Vancouver, but are keen to continue where we left off.

What do you think, will we be able to go to bigger events „more carefree“ again in 2022?

AB: Well I certainly hope so. The current state of affairs is not a pleasing one, to say the least.

What was the best album released in 2021 so far in your opinion – except yours of course?

AB: I loved that Ænigmatum LP that our label put out just recently. Last Stargazer is absolutely beautiful, check it out – “Psychic Secretions”. Fulci’s “Exhumed Information” is a gem that we all need, and lastly Genghis Tron “Dream Weapon”, insanely well crafted and produced. That’s what I remember came out, there are still things that I haven’t checked out and it’s patiently waiting on the shelf to be discovered.

What band or musician influenced you most in your musical life?

AB: Can’t mention one without the other so the band or album wise – “Melissa”, “Master of Puppets”, “Hell Awaits”, “Master of Reality”, “Somewhere in Time”, “Operation Mindcrime”, “The Bleeding”, “Legion”, “Dawn of Possession”, “Blessed are the Sick”, “Left Hand Path”, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”, “Blood Fire Death”, “A Blaze in the Northern Sky”, “Dimension Hatröss”, “Testimony of the Ancients”…. Sean Reinert’s musical genius on “Human” and all of the Cynic material. The 4 miscreants in Voïvod past and present. Drum divinities – Mikkey Dee, Clive Burr, Dave Lombardo, Igor Cavalera, Gene Hoglan, Pete Sandoval, Scott Travis, Vinnie Paul, Alex Hernandez (!!!), Hannes Grossmann, Frost, Hellhammer, Fenriz, Mike Heller, Alex Rudinger, Mike Hamilton ‘99-’03 era Deeds of Flesh, Matt Van Ende of Defiance, Jon Allen of Sadus, Tony Laureano, Mike Portnoy, Snowy Shaw, Jeff Porcaro, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Phil Collins, my uncle; Other legends – Trey Azagthoth, Andy LaRocque, Hank Shermann, Chris DeGarmo, Mike Wead, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, James Hetfield, Criss Oliva, Peter Steele, Leif Edling, Lemmy, Tom G. Warrior, Baz Thomson, Jeff Hanneman, Dimebag, Erik Rutan, Erik Lindmark, Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Glenn Tipton, James Murphy, Alex Webster, Luc Lemay, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Midnight, Carl Albert, Layne Staley, Andrew Eldritch, Klaus Schulze……. I also get inspired by my band mates daily, I can’t ask for more.

Which album was your first Metal Album and concert bought with your own money, and why?

AB: “Fighting the World” and “Master of Puppets” on the same day, I can’t remember when, but definitely a lifetime ago. I’d inherited the “Master..” tape from my older sister previously. First concert I ever attended with a ticket purchased from my allowance was a local one, when I lived in Belgrade, a festival of sorts I believe.

Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?

AB: I wish I had some. Music it is, as it’s everything really. Spending time with my kid is absolutely dope.

A few words to your (future) Fans out there in Germany and all the others in the world?

AB: Death impends. Hope to see you all out there when we finally do start moving about freely.

Thanks for the interview, Many greetings to all of the Band. Something that is important to me: Stay healthy and be safe!

AB: You too! Thank you for the interview.
