Tobi – Magnus
Hello Magnus from Perpetual Etude. My name is Tobi. I run a Facebook page and a webblog. On this page I post reviews of current albums, interviews, band presentations and reports about concerts that I visit with my wheelchair. On the one hand, to tell other wheelchair users how the venue is equipped in terms of accessibility and on the other hand, how to best proceed to get tickets, which is usually not possible with conventional ticket portals. In the future I will also write about hygiene measures, as this is important for me as a high-risk patient and for my readers too. Of course, I also write about the bands‘ performance. Today I have a few questions for you about your upcoming Album „Now is the Time“.
First of all, I want to ask you, how are you doing right now?
Everything is great over here. It’s almost Friday and that’s the day for the next single Once We Were One. So I can’t complain at all. I hope that everything is good with you too.
Would you please tell my Followers about „Perpetual Etude“ and introduce you plus the Musicians behind the Band?
It all started out as a project, in early 2019. I had some songs I really liked that stood out genre-wise to much from the other bands I’m in. So I thought, let’s give it a go and try something new. Perpetual Etude was born. I started out in 1994-95 something. Since then, there’s been a lot of bands and constellations in the name of hard rock and metal. I’m always playing guitar or writing songs. So it felt pretty natural to do something on my own.
The first one I talked to about joining was Kristian. I really liked his vocals from the first time I heard him sing. I know that it would be a perfect match for my songs. After some demo tapes, I contacted Kaspar and Vidar. I knew from the start that this band really needed a keyboard player that could play both fast and melodic. Kaspar was the first name that came to my mind. Been listening to his other bands for a long time.
Vidar and me had been playing together before, in Air Raid. A really great guy and a good drummer. So no tough choice, I’m just happy he’s onboard. Mikael was the last member to join. He was very busy with NorthTale when it all started out, so first I did not even ask him. But then, when the first bass guy could not make it for some reason, Mikael was the first one to ask. That was the day before the video shoot of I’ve got the power…
How happy are you that the album will be released on 15th of October and the World can hear your 80’s Style Heavy Metal?
It feels very good. It has been ready for a while so it’s nice that the album finally is coming out. But you never know how it will be received. It remains to be seen.
What can Metalheads except from your first Longplayer?
A good balance, I would probably say. A lot of melody that is baked into a slightly harder sphere. There are up-tempo songs, more aggressive songs and even some calmer songs. Without losing focus on the fact that it is hard rock / metal we play, nothing else. And, of course, a lot of guitar and keyboard solos hehe. I think there is something for everyone if you like 80s rock / metal.
How about the Times you where working on „Now is the Time“? And do you have a ensurance for this awesome Voice of your Singer?
The majority of the songs were written in 2019 and early 2020. We already started recording the drums in the studio in January 2020 for the first six songs. Back then, the idea was still on my part to just have it as a project. I already played in two bands during the time that took a lot of time. (Air Raid / & Gathering of Kings) But after we signed with Black Lodge Records, we decided to do this ALL IN. Why not play in three bands hehe. Love playing music.
There is never an insurance, hehe. But I’m happy with how everything turned out on the album. We will see what the future brings. Kristian’s pretty busy now with his second band. But I already have some hidden aces up my sleeve.
If you compare Perpetual Etude with other Bands in your Genre, which Band is coming close to your Sound?
It’s probably music that has shaped me during my childhood and that I still listen to. Talisman, Europe, Malmsteen, John Norum, Rainbow and more. I never thought, now we’re going to sound like this or like that. It has mostly been writing music from the heart.
„Show Me“ was the second Single you released so far and „I’ve Got The Power“ the first in 2020. Will there one or two more to come?
Yes Tobi! One more, this Friday the 17th of September. Then Once We Were One will be out.
Could you tell my Followers in a short sentence about each Song and what is the Story behind?
01. „I’ve Got The Power“
Never give up, go your own way. And be proud of it.
02. „Show Me“
A sad story about breaking up.
03. „Straight Through The Heart“
When you meet someone who goes straight to the heart. And also through the heart.
04. „Once We Were One“
Look ahead, remember it but leave it behind you.
05. „Hell Fire Burn“
When everything really feels like hell. Everyone probably has such periods in life. I had one at the time I wrote this song.
06. „Now Is The Time“
If you want to make a change, you must start with yourself.
07. „Sail Away“
When someone close passes away. A really sad story.
08. „Our Love“
When you find someone you would do anything for.
„Hell Fire Burn“ and „I’ve Got The Power““ are my favourite Songs so far. How about you? Got a fav?
All the songs have probably been my favorites during the time I wrote them. But now, in the current situation, with the songs behind me, it’s Once We Were One and Sail Away.
Who has made the Coverartwork for „Now Is The Time“? and did you produced, mixed, masterd and recorded it by yourself?
The talented artist Gustavo Sazes made the cover art for the album.
I have produced it mostly myself. Had a clear picture in my head of how I wanted it from the beginning.
The mixing has been done by the talented Victor Olsson. A good friend of mine, but we can also work very professionally where you sometimes put such things aside. He always delivers what you want.
The album is mastered by Plec at Nordic Sound Lab. Really, really good at what he does. Over at Nordic Sound Lab we recorded the drums on the first songs. The rest are recorded at Rabbit Hole Studios. Lastly, a certain part is also recorded at home in the best possible way.
To be honest: I loved if i could hear three or four more Songs at „Now Is The Time“. Why there are not more Songs on the Album?
Have been asked that question a few times and may have realized that it was perhaps a little too few songs. But wanted a good balance, if there was a song that was similar to another song that was already included, I chose not to include it. But there is more, I can promise hehe.
Are there plans for a second album? Sorry for the early question – but i like your music.
First of all. Thank you so much Tobi! And the answer is short. YES SIR!
Is there allready a Tour planned?
Nothing for the moment, but I believe and hope that it will be in the near future. It seems life slowly is returning to „normal“.
How are your plans for the near future of „Perpetual Etude“?
First it will be to celebrate when the record is released. After that, I just hope people want to see us live. I have already started writing the sequel album.
If you could choose a Festival to play with „Perpetual Etude“, which would you choose and why?
Good question. But the answer is actually at home. At the Sweden Rock Festival. The reason is that I have been a frequent visitor there since I was 14-15 years old. It would have been truly awesome to play there with our own music. Played there in 2019 with Gathering of Kings and it was a magical experience.
What do you think we will be able to go to bigger events „more carefree“ again in 2022?
I really hope so and it feels like it’s going in the right direction now.
What was the best Album released in 2021 so far in your opinion – except yours of course?
That was a difficult question. There has been a lot that has happened this year. So I have not really listened so much to new releases that I can answer that question. But one band that has caught my interest lately is Nestor. I think that album can be really good.
What Band or Musician did influenced you most in your musicial live?
KISS, Malmsteen, Talisman, Symphony X, Europe, Pantera and many many more.
Which Album was your first Metal Album and Concert Ticket bought of your own money, and why?
The first record I bought for my own money… I think it was a used edition of Total Control by John Norum. Then you could also afford some sweets hehe. A really good record. The first real concert was with KISS in Gothenburg in 1996.
Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?
I like to draw and paint. But it is far too rare nowadays. Then I have my little dog and cat.
If you got one wish…
Then I would have needed a lot of time to think. So no good answer to that question. Although that was a good one.
A few words to your (future) Fans out there in Germany and all the Others in the World?
A big thanks to all the fans and future fans. Hope to see you on the road sometime!
Thanks for the interview, Magnus from Perpetual Etude. Many greetings to all of the Band. Something that is important to me: Stay healthy and be safe!
Thank you so much Tobi! Wish you the same!
