Tobi – Joachim
Hello Joachim from Vansind. My name is Tobi. I run a Facebook page and a webblog. On this page I post reviews of current albums, interviews, band presentations and reports about concerts that I visit with my wheelchair. On the one hand, to tell other wheelchair users how the venue is equipped in terms of accessibility and on the other hand, how to best proceed to get tickets, which is usually not possible with conventional ticket portals.
In the future I will also write about hygiene measures, as this is important for me as a high-risk patient and for my readers too. Of course, I also write about the bands‘ performance. Today I have a few questions for you about your new EP „MXIII“.
First of all, I want to ask you, how are you doing right now?
Actually quite good. We just finished 3 shows in 21 hours this past weekend, and all went really well and we were really positive about how people was reacting to our performances and our songs. These shows were our first with a standing crowd, and it was really nice to see people screaming, headbanging, dancing, moshing and making circle pits again..
Please introduce yourself and your Bandmates to me and my Followers a little!
I’m Joachim, lead male vocal and I’ve been growling in various bands since i was a teenager in the early nineties. In Vansind, I’m one of seven musicians from really different musical backgrounds. Some have many years of band experience, and others are more fresh to the scene, but we all share the passion for music, metal and performing for an audience.
Are all of you out of Folk Metal or are there other Genres you are familiar or other Bands you are in it?
I would rather put it this way, our only member with direct folk metal experience is Danni, who have played drums in Svartsot almost 10 years ago. The rest of us have been playing a lot of other metal genres, from black metal, symphonic metal to death/thrash metal.
How did it came to raise a band with seven Members and playing Folk Metal and is the current setup the same or did it change since 2019?
I think the reason we happen to be seven people comes from the decision to have two lead singers. We started out with only one guitarist, but quickly realized that our band needed two to fulfill our visions for the overall sound. We really likes the possibilty to make twin guitar harmonies and the thick solid sound it creates with two guitars in rhytm parts.
You have a awesome deep voice and your female Partners Voice is a little like Valkyries whispers kind words to the ones entering Odins great Hall. I really like to listen to you. How about the Metalfans in Denmark? Do they know what awesome Band they have? A shoutout goes of course to the instrumental Guys. This combination of hard music and the beautyfull sound from the whistle, Great!
Thanks for your kind words. We try to use our two very contrasting voices to make as much diversity as possible, and think we have something not seen on the Danish folk metal scene before. And the folk instruments; whiste, bagpipe and other special instruments we will be introducing later on is the key element in making Vansind sound as it does.
What can we expect from Vansind in the near future? I saw on Facebook that you are entering the Studio, and right when i write my Questions you finished drum recordings.
We just finished recording two new songs, and hopefully they will be released before the end of this year. Later this year or early next year it is our hope to record again, and hopefully release a couple more songs in the first half of 2022. We are also planning on making some kind of physical release in 2022 of the ep MXIII and the new tracks combined to a full lengh release. We still also have 6 more shows on our MXIII 2021 tour left, so the end of this year is going to be very busy for us.
Will it be in english or dansih language? I fit is in danish, i need a translation 😉
It is our plan to keep making our lyrics in Danish, as we think it fits the theme of Vikings and the middle ages, where we draw our inspiration. It is a difficult thing to make full translations of our lyrics, but maybe a kind of resume of the general meaning of the songs could be added in the future releases.
Could you say something to each Song from „MXIII“ to describe it for my followers and me? I really want to know about what you are singing.
„Fra fremmed kyst“ This song is about a host of vikings going towards distant shores to plunder and find new riches to survive, as their harwest and livestock is failing. But even though they bring home silver and other riches, there is more than they bargained for. Plague, sickness, death and despair follow in their wake and will eventually be the demise for their homelands.
„Den farefulde færd“ This song is about the Danish king Svend who in 1013 won over the English King and how he was betrayed by his own heir. It is both a praise of the Kings bravery and a call to arms with a plea for victory and mercy from the gods from the families left back home.
„Gæstebudet“ This song is about a soldier meeting a girl on the last night before he goes to war. And how the meeting ends in a desperate choice for the girl who, in her young naive folly, makes the choice to kill her unborn child because of the shame of being left alone back home.
And of course i want to know more about „Valborgsnat“. I think it is about the Day for the Witches? In Germany we call it „Walpurgisnacht“ and all the Witches fly to our Mountain called Blocksberg at the night of 30.04. till 01.05.
This was the first song we wrote, and is about, yet another, girl who this time have been abused and given birth to a child. And her only choice is to sacrifice the child to the gods on walpurgis night. By doing this she also dies herself of a broken heart.
Actually most of our lyrics are quite dark, and we are trying to make a more sinister and depressing lyrical theme in our songs then most other Danish folk metal bands. Most of our characters die or have to make difficult decisions with dire consequenses.
Where do you get your inspiration from? When People hear any Name from scandinavian Folk Metal Band they always think They must be singing about the „Edda“ or Viking Sagas.
Most of our inspiration comes from daily life, but in a viking/middle age setting. We also try to use norse mythology and scandinavian history, not necesarily historical correct, but to make the themes feel more grounded in reality.
Do you have a label signed?
Not yet, but we are working on a possible cooperation with a label.
How did you as deal with the restrictions in the meantime? How much does it restricted you in your working life? I hope you and your Family + a Friends are healthy!
All the restrictions was hard on us as a band. Our rehearsal space was shut down for many months, so our production of new songs was really affected by it. Personally for me and my family we were very isolated at first, because of personal health issues in my family. The first 3 months was hard, but the second lock down was not as hard for us, I could still go to work and have an almost normal daily life.
Is Heavy Metal and the Subgenres also a means for you to switch off everything in this hectic world, to Pause and just listen?
I think all music do that for me as long as it is played on real instruments. Music only made with a computer does nothing for me. I think it is really important that we take the time out of our schedule and do something every day to relax and shut out the rest of the world. With our ‚always on’ society breathing down our necks, it a really good thing to just sit down and listen to a record, read a book or just be.
What was the best Album released in 2021 so far in your opinion?
I haven’t actually listened to a lot of new albums this year, but Gojiras ‚Fortitude’ stands out as a really great album. I’m also looking forward to find the time to dive into the new Iron Maiden album, although I wasn’t a big fan of their last album.
What Band or Musiscian did influenced you most in your musicial live?
A very difficult question to answer, as there has been so many influences I cant count them. But personally At The Gates changed a lot for me and still is an inspiration to this day.
Which Album was your first Metal Album bought of your own money, and why?
I think it was GNR „Appetite For Destruction“ or maybe an Iron Maiden album from the 80’s. I started to buy records because it was really difficult back in those days to find music like we can today on the internet, so bying or burrowing records was essential if you wanted to listen to new music in the heavy metal genres. I spend hours every day after school in record stores just listening to everything they had, and then bying the best so I could listen even more at home.
Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?
Not really.. music is all I need apart from work and family.
If you got one wish…
For myself? I would really love to get on the road and play all the major festivals around Europe and beyond.
A few words to your Fans out there in Germany and all the Others in the World?
Thanks for your support! We are nothing without the listeners and those coming to our shows. I hope 2022 will be the year we get that opportunity in Germany.
Thanks for the interview, Joachim from Vansind. Many greetings to all from the Band. Something that is important to me Stay healthy and be safe!
