DAEMONICUS burst into the extreme and death metal scene in 2006, with several demo EPs and two highly acclaimed full length records to date, the four- piece also took the stages by storm and toured with acts such as Christ Agony and Groteskh. Several line- up changes may have hit the band hard, but did not stop founding members PO Wester and Jörgen Persson to continously writing song material.
With a new and strong line- up backed by bassist Martin Pudas and David Ekevärn on drums, this summer DAEMONICUS will return with their most confident and brutal work to date: Eschaton is a concept album and features nine razor- sharp and blistering tracks, showcasing a crushing blend of modern and old school death metal sound, yet it remains true to DAEMONICUS‘ core at the same time as progressing both as musicians and as a band. While the record marks the beginning of a new era for them, DAEMONICUS have recorded a masterpiece of Swedish death metal, and one that will proove to stand the test of time. Eschaton was mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström at Enhanced Audio Productions, and will be released as Vinyl, CD and Digital on August 20, 2021 via the Swedish powerhouse underground label Black Lion Records. Tobi – Metal and Me
PO Wester – Daemonicus
Hello PO from Daemonicus. My name is Tobi. I run a Facebook page and a webblog. On this page I post reviews of current albums, interviews, band presentations and reports about concerts that I visit with my wheelchair. On the one hand, to tell other wheelchair users how the venue is equipped in terms of accessibility and on the other hand, how to best proceed to get tickets, which is usually not possible with conventional ticket portals.
In the future I will also write about hygiene measures, as this is important for me as a high-risk patient and for my readers too. Of course, I also write about the bands‘ performance. Today I have a few questions for you about your new Album „Eschaton“.
First of all, I want to ask you, how are you and your Bandmates doing right now?
We are doing fine, even though we havent really met eachother much lately. At the moment we are withouit a rehearsal place but I’m sure it will work itself out soon. Anyway, i’m still on vacation from work so nothing can bring me down.
I have to tell you, that i am a Greenhorn what Music form Daemonicus belong to. I was really impressed as i first heard that preasure of „To Poison Everything“ and the ragefull Vocals of each track. Awesome!
Thanks a lot, man! I’m extremly proud of this album and the way that it turned out in the end so I’m glad you like it!
What can we expect of Eschadon?
There is a whole lot to expect from any band really that didnt release an album for 9 years while still being active It didn’t take us 9 years to write it but you will find that it is a very thought out album. So the stakes are high but there’s no doubt in my mind that we somehowe failed to put out exactly the album we wanted to! Expect to hear an album from a band that is hungrier than ever and better than ever.
If i ask you to talk about every song in one sentence what would you say about:
„To Poison Everything“ Death Metal madnessl right of the bat!
„Reform Or Die“ Midtempo mayhem! Groovy tune with a nice melodic touch.
„The Double Edge Sword“ -“I come not to bring peace but to bring a sword” Religion of pieace huh?
„Heretic Trails“ A groovy and omnious tune with a great chorus.
„The Grand Inquisitor“ Faster than anything we’ve done before.
„Sacred And Secular“ Heavy as heavy is with the addition of a middle finger to the pedofile ring of catholicism. What’s not to love about that?
„You Know My Name“ Fast and heavy but beware of the neckbreaker in the middle. This will be a nice live addition.
„Fate Sealed Faith“ This song is what the album has been building up to all along. The war to end all wars. And my personal favourite.
„Termination“ A nice accoustic and instrumental way to round off this album, and to finally give you some time to breath again and contemplate what just happened
What did you do in this nine years of „Pause“ except writing Songs and looking for Musicians to complete Daemonicus again?
Theese last 9 years has been a bit chaotic from time to time with lots of ups and downs! As I said, it didn’t take us the whole 9 years to write the thing. In fact i had the foundation for a couple of the tracks already in progress when we recorded Deadwork. So i remember being cocky about us soon having a third album out in no time. Serves me right 🙂
Anyway! Yeah first we had to find a new drummer and luckily we found David since he is the best! Period! At some point in the timeline i decided to start my own business which pretty much had me working around the clock and eliminated all kinds of musicianship for me for 2 long years. Another thing was some discussions about the writing process that someone wasn’t happy about and the tention in the band wasn’t the same as it used to. It wasn’t as fun anymore i guess? Then when Stefan, our singer left we had actually started to record the album.
Eventually though, when the album was mixed, mastered and ready to go viral we signed a deal with a label that just kept making excuses and delaying for a whole year until we were finally dropped from them. Then after Black Lion took us in everything has being going faster than ever and it is really starting to feel as fun as it once was to play music! Actually I would say that 87% of the material for this album were written in the summer of 2014, considering that it shouldnt have to take us 9 years for the next one!
„To Poison Everything“ was the first single to release from your new Studioalbum. Why this Song and are there songs to follow, perhaps as Video too?
That’s correct. Well I think it was mainly our label (Black Lion Records) who decided thiat one as the first single. A decision that we totally agree with. It sets the tone for the whole album and as i mentioned it is a concept album so it was fitting in a lot ways i think. There will be more singles following as well! 2 more in fact! The second single being the second track of the album as well. “Reform or Die” Will be released iAugust 6 with a lyric video as well. The third single is all very secret at this point but since the album is out 20th this month it wont’t be long until I can reveal it. Considering a proper musicvideo. It is something we have talked about and more or less decided to do. Hopefully during this fall.
What is the main difference between „Eschaton“ and your last Realease „Host of Rotting Flesh“?
Actually our last release was Deadwork from 2012 🙂 but still the difference between all our albums is huge and all things are pointing in the right direction. – Mea Culpa, i was dead at mind i think | Tobi 😂
On Deadwork we felt that we outdid Host Of Rotting Flesh in every way possible and that we found our sound. Eschaton, I think is a perfect follow up to Deadwork. Not only because that lurking intro sound that fades in on To Poison Everything is actually taken striaght from the absolute last chord you’ll hear on Deadwork.
I feel we took all the good parts from the previous albums and enhanced them at the same time we learned from mistales that where made in the writing process.
If you compare the both you probably will hear that it’s still the same band as always and we have in no way compromised in the music. The main difference is mainly higher quality writing and that we keeps getting better at the presentation
The new tracks are ragefull, aggressive and powerfull but also critical to several issues. How long did you write to them and how long did it take for them to be ready to release, for our Ears?
To begin with I struggle with writing lyrics at the same time i love it doing it. So it This time it was even worse than usual. We decided early on that we wanted to make a concept album and what couild be better than exploring all the cruel things religion has brought us since it first peeked out its nasty little head. Once we hatched that main theme it is kind of a buffe of topics to choose from really.
So I narrowed it down to 9 (track 10 is instrumental) and then tried to tie em all together in a nice way. For me when I wtite music I instantly have a good perception of how i want the vocals to interact with the riffs so when I write music I prefer doing it all rather than co-writing. I’m just horrible like that 🙂 But yeah as I said I pretty much had all the demo recordings done by 2014.
A favorite track of mine is “You Know My Name”! Do you have a song that you particularly like on „Eschadon“?
An excellent choice I might add! I really like that one as well. That track is one of the songs that I had started working on when we released the last album but luckily it was never released in the form it was back then. They have all been evolving over the years, adding stuff and removing unnecessary parts. Like when that song gets slow and heavy as fuck to build of for the melodic dual guitar solo. It was added very late. A benefit of taking all the time in the world to finnish something..
My favorite though is Fate Sealed By Faith. I will even go so far as to say that it is the best piece of music i has yet to spawn. There is no way I can desctibe how many hours i did spend trying out endless variations of the intro melody before I finally nailed it. It is really close to my heart
The Coaverartwork is really awesome. Who got the Idea for it and how did you react as you saw it finished the first time?
It was Jörgen who found it on some site where artists had pieces for sale and sent it to me really excited. At first I have to admit i was kinda reluctant to it but he convinced me so we bought it and when I started to work with the layots and added our logo it all just came together for me. I don’t even remember what issue i had but whatever it was it’s long gone by now. I think it is the perfect fit for this album.
Can you imagine to write/sing Songs about other Things like perhaps slaying Dragons, saving Princesses, or Vikings?
Slaying princesses and saving vikings ey? I think you might be on to something huge here! 🙂
Yeah I guess I could do it for fun if i had the time to spare. I mean i grew up listening to Helloween and DIO so I bet I might have it a few power metal songs in me. However I could never do it wholeheartedly, and then whats the point?
A few words to the fans who definitely can’t wait to hear you live. Are there any plans about for a Tour to follow the new release?
No tour plans yet. We do of course want to have lots of stuff booked but the world being how it is theese days there’s really no purpose in trying to book anything.
How did you as deal with the restrictions in the meantime? How much does it restricted you in your working life?
Here in Sweden it never got to those major lockdowns or quarantine. So we still had freedom to roam about but nowhere to go since not much with any resemblance wuth a bar ot restaurants had open. So it’s been kinda boring but to be honest. I kinda prefer being drunk at home anyway so it all turned out ok
How have you spent your Free time under Covid 19 so far?
Mainly I’ve been spending time with my kids and my girlfriend. Just trying to ignore all the weird stuff in the world
Is Heavy Metal and the Subgenres also a means for you to switch off everything in this hectic world, to Pause and just listen?
Oh yeah! and it’s always been that way for me with music, and especially with metal. The perfect cure for whatever ills you. Like nothing beats a total blow out of the mind by listening to something really brutal. Death Metal has a lot of energy but it can still be something to drowse off to and rest a weary head. Depending on the mood. Doesnt have to only the heaviest shit of course. Whatever floats your boat
What was the best Album released in 2021 so far in your opinion?
“The Crown – Royal Destroyer” easily. That album is amazing! – nice choice! Got it right from the Start! | Tobi
What Band or Musician did influenced you most in your musicial live?
Hearing Chuck Schuldiner for the first time was the tipping point that got me into Death Metal for real. Evrything from the mind blowing riffs and leads to hsi lyrical writing skills is unmatched. But you know, you pick up things and new techniques here and there along the way. Which is what makes it so much fun.
Dan Swanö is another musician that I really am influenced by when writing riffs and melodies. And of course hundreds more! But when it comes to influences in my singing the answer is shorter. I just try to sound as much as Peter Tägtgren as possible
Which Album was your first Metal Album bought of your own money, and why?
It was Guns N’ Roses – Use Your Illusion 2 and I was 10 years old. I remember seeing the music video for the song “You Could Be Mine” on MTV and that was it!
Combining the cool and heavy music with clips from “Terminator 2”. I mean, there’s just no way to resist! I bothered my parents about that movie and begged them to let me see it and eventually they caved in and we rented it on my 10th birthday. Best day of my life! And after that I of course had to have the album which i bought on cassette, and eventually I bought the CD as well. – we have to meet and talk. I was fucking amazed as John hit his Bike with “You Could Be Mine” on his Cassette Radio! | Tobi
After that there was just no going back. I got to see GN’R on their reunion tour in Stockholm in 2017 and it was just a wave of emotions that kept hitting me.
I owe it all to Arnold, Slash & Axl.
Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?
I’ve been picking up drawing lately which is something i did lots of as a kid. Theese days it’s mainly on a drawing tablet instead of paper but after some practice I started to get the hang of it and it’s a lot of fun. I especially enjoy drawing or painting while watching horror movies at the same time for some reason. That combination is my happy place. Weird..
If you got one wish…
The first thing that comes to mind is my long dream of one day get to paint an album cover for whatever band. But I could and probably should aim higher if I had just the one wish huh? World peace? food for everyone? Fuck that! People need to die, man! It’s overcrowded enough as it is!
A few words to your Fans out there in Germany and all the Others in the World?
Daemonicus is back from the grave and as soon as we are allowed to tour I sincerly hope we get to see evryone of you, new and old fans. Until then enjoy our album Eschaton and take care of eachother!
