Ich durfte Ken Mary von der US-amerikanischen Speed/Thrash Metal Kapelle aus Arizona interviewen. Viel Spaß beim Lesen des Interviews und natürlich auch beim Hören des Albums, sobald es veröffentlicht ist. Ken Mary – Flotsam and Jetsam

Hello Ken Mary from „Flotsam and Jetsam“.  My name is Tobi.  I run a Facebook page and a webblog.  On this page I post reviews of current albums, interviews, band presentations and reports about concerts that I visit with my wheelchair.  On the one hand, to tell other wheelchair users how the venue is equipped in terms of accessibility and on the other hand, how to best proceed to get tickets, which is usually not possible with conventional ticket portals.

In the future I will also write about hygiene measures, as this is important for me as a high-risk patient and for my readers, too. Of course, I also write about the bands‘ performance.  Today I have a few questions for you about your new Album „Blood in the Water“.

First of all, I want to ask you, how are you and your Bandmates doing right now?

Thank you for asking. So far we are all doing well. Two of the guys in the band had Covid, and we have had many family members and friends affected. Some have ended up in the hospital, but fort he most part everyone is OK and has recovered.

If you meet someone (to be honest, someone who doesn’t know you, never loved Metal) who did not now what kind of Band „Flotsam and Jetsam“ is and what kind of Music you make – what do you tell him?

We make the kind of music that impacts you . . . it’s going to hit you hard. If you want to just kick back and relax, don’t listen to us, lol!

„Blood in the Water“ is your 14th (!!) Longplayer how proud about this awesome number of Albums are you and are you still nervous as you was at first time you released „Doomsday For The Deceiver“?

Well I wasn’t around for those albums, but have released plenty of records. It’s always a bit nerve wracking. You really hope you made some art that will touch other people. All we do in Flotsam is create music that moves us and makes us feel something. If it does that, then hopefully you have a few million people that agree with you!

The Track “Burn The Sky” was released as first Single. Why did you chose this Song?

This was a song that was at the top of everyone’s personal list in the band. Honestly, we could have released any song on the record as they all represent the band very well. We’re very proud of this album and were sure not to include any songs we didn’t love ourselves.

The Lyric-Video for „Blood in the Water“ is one of the best i ever seen. How long do you work on an Video like this?

That was our friend Andy Plinkington who created that. I’m not sure how long it takes, but he certainly did an amazing video for us.

One of my favourite Songs is „Cry for the Dead“ because of his intensivity. What inspires you to a Song like this one and where do you get your Song-Ideas from – specially for Blood in the Water?

Ideas for the songs come from various sources, and on this album everyone contributed to the writing. I have been involved in many albums, and this one was truly a team effort and a band chemistry that is very rare. Sometimes we get a title that spurs other ideas, sometimes it’s the music that spurs further ideas. Sometimes we work alone and then collaborate with what we’ve created. It’s a varied process and involves different pairings and teams of people within the band. It’s actaullya really cool process.

Who was the Artist for your Cover-Artwork and was inspired him to this awesome Cover? Again that was Andy, and he was inspired by the song titles and lyrics. He had those components when he created the cover.

Andi, if you MUST chose which is your fav Song of the upcoming Album?

This is truly impossible, lol. We love every song on this album, and hopefully you will agree with that. I think different people will have different favorites, but it’s going tob e a tough choice fort hem we hope!!!

Is there a Tour planned allready?

We have tentative dates but there is still a virus out there so we will have to wait and see when things begin to open up.

How is it to you to stay in contact with your fans via social media in these pandemic times and to find out what the mood is like in the fans‘ camp?

We interact with many fans on social media, and it was very helpful during this time. The mood has been much like we felt making this record. The times are difficult for many people and their mood reflects that . . . frustration, sadness, danger, and sometimes anger are expressed. If that’s how you felt, this album will connect well with you.

How did you deal with the restrictions in the meantime? How much does it restricted you in your working life? I only get the News from Germany about the Virus, and that is enough for me and my peace of Mind. How about in Arizona in May/June, 2021?

We have been fairly restricted in terms of performing, as everyone has. Arizona seems to be doing well now, but that being said we had one of the highest number of cases of Covid per capita of anywhere on the planet, and we had many friends get sick, including the two band members I mentioned earlier. It did make working on the album more difficult, but we did work around the difficulties and we were very happy with what we created.

How have you spent your free time under Covid 19 so far?

Well, I haven’t had much free time since I do a good deal of production work and have been working on movie soundtracks and other music.

How is „Flotzilla“ doing in these pandemic times where not many human food walking around?

Flotzilla is very hungry at the moment. He’s always looking for a meal . . . so people better be careful!!

Is Heavy Metal and the Subgenres also a means for you to switch off everything in this hectic world, to Pause and just listen? And which other Genres you listen to?

Yes, music is certainly something that will take you to a different world . . . a different place. I listen to tons of different music styles because as a producer, I must be familiar with what is changing in music. Metal is my favorite, though, because it’s very exciting and interesting music.

If you got one wish…?

That’s hard to say . . . I’d wish for twenty more wishes . . . but seriously, maybe that the world would be a healthy, safe and just place for all of us to live.

A few words to your fans out there in Germany and all the others in the World?

Thank you so much for all of your support. We hope you are healthy, safe, and happy, and we very much hope to see you soon!

Thanks for the interview, Ken Mary. Many greetings to all of your Bandmates. Something that is important to me: Stay healthy and good luck for the Release of your new Album!

Thank you very much Tobias!
