Hello Koen of Primal Creation. My name is Tobi. I run a Facebook page and a webblog. On this page I post reviews of current albums, interviews, band presentations and reports about concerts that I visit with my wheelchair. On the one hand, to tell other wheelchair users how the venue is equipped in terms of accessibility and on the other hand, how to best proceed to get tickets, which is usually not possible with conventional ticket portals.
In the future I will also write about hygiene measures, as this is important for me as a high-risk patient and for my readers too. Of course, I also write about the bands‘ performance. Today I have a few questions for you about your new Album „News Feed“.
First of all, I want to ask you, how are you and your Bandmates doing right now?
Hi Tobi, thanks for asking! We still got our jobs and most importantly we did not get infected as of yet. On the other hand, there’s some frustration as we can’t rehearse or perform live, which we love. We miss playing live a lot. Then again, we’re all in this together and we know why we adhere to the rules. We do that pretty strictly; our own health and the health of others is paramount.
And how are you when you think about April 16th, 2021?
Excited! It’s our second full-length album and we’re very much looking forward to getting it out there. It’s been a different process compared to our first album. In the midst of the recordings, due to an accident, I broke my hip and a few months later the pandemic kicked in. As a result, there was an irregular schedule of writing and recording. That way, you kind of lose perspective on the music as a band. Not to say that we weren’t satisfied with the final product, we absolutely are! It’s just been a different and kind of strange journey.
„Please Disperse“ was the first single to release from your new Studioalbum. Why this song?
It’s catchy, it’s fast and it’s compact. It gives a first impression of what the album will sound like, while at the same time leaving enough to discover on the full album.
What can we expect from your new album? What are the main themes you sing about?
News Feed consists of one intro and 8 songs. The main ingredients are thrash metal, modern influences, progressive twists, melody and agression. The lyrical themes of the record are influenced by the world around us. Some would call it political, we call it a critical view.
What is the main difference between „News Feed“ and your last Realease?
It’s difficult to be the judge of your own work, but I feel like our sound got more focussed on News Feed compared to Demockracy. Furthermore, the sound improved as a whole, thanks to Francis and Alan.
The new tracks are energetic, aggressive and they are going straight „into the Face“. How long did you write to them and how long did it take for them to be ready for our Ears?
I think we started putting the songs together early 2019. However, we always have some riffs lying around. When we’re in the rehearsal space we record a lot, so it’s quite possible some pieces date back to before Demockracy. Recording started early 2020, but due to the aforementioned circumstances I recorded the vocals in the summer of 2020.
Most Musicians say no but i ask it anyway 😊 Do you have a song that you particularly like on „News Feed“?
My personal favorite would be the closer of the album „The Daily Noose“! It’s got that oldschool Metallica / Slayer galloping thrash feel to it, makes you wanna tear down the room.
The Cover-Artwork is really awesome. From who was the Idea and is there a Message behind?
Thanks! We were looking for artwork that would fit the overarching theme of the record. Together with the artist Thijs De Rijcke we brainstormed (pun intended) and got to this result, which we’re very happy with! We leave the message open for interpretation, but I think it’s obvious there’s a link with the lyrics on the album.
A few words to the fans who definitely can’t wait to hear you live. Are there any plans about a streaming Event?
At this moment not yet. First thing we got planned is recording a real video when the covid situation allows for it. We REALLY hope there’s a possibility to do a real liveshow in the second half of the year.
How is it to you to stay in contact with your fans via social media in these pandemic times and to find out what the mood is like in the fans‘ camp?
We try to focus on staying (inter)active on social media, but we really miss talking to the fans before and after a liveshow. Having a beer at the merch table and talking about our shared passion can’t be beaten, really.
How did you deal with the restrictions in the meantime? How much does it restricted you in your working life? I absolutey know nothing about the restrictions in Belgium.
It all depends on your job. A lot of people have to work from home as much as they can and as far as their job allows for it. Some of us work in ICT and can work from home a lot. An other bandmember works in transport and for him it’s impossible to work from home. We all wear masks in public and the few days we are at work. Social gatherings are pretty impossible, except outside in a small bubble of four people.
How have you spent your Free time under Covid 19 so far?
I bought myself an acoustic guitar and now that the weather is getting better I started cycling a lot again! We live near a forest, so we try to go out for walks from time to time with our little son. I also try to read different kind of books, from social sciences over philosophy to fantasy and other fiction. It enriches and calms the mind at the same time.
If you could privately go to a concert in this, sorry for the expression, shitty corona pandemic, which one would it be?
For me, it would be Steven Wilson with his new record or the announced Opeth shows where they celebrate 30 years by playing a song from every record. Been a fan for the bigger part of their career.
Get away from the music a little. What about hobbies?
As I stated before I love to ride my racebike over the cobbles and the Flemish hills. It’s a great stress reliever to get away from the daily ratrace! Furthermore I dive into Nintendo games from time to time and I try to read a lot.
A few words to your Fans out there in Germany and all the Others in the World?
Thank you for supporting metalbands through this crisis. Without fans there would be no bands, never forget that! You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, BigCartel and Bandcamp. Like and follow us to stay up-to-date on all things Primal Creation.
Furthermore we would like to applaud you, Tobi, for your initiative! It’s admirable that you make an effort for more inclusion and practical accessability in our scene, so that people with a physical impairment can enjoy shows just like the rest of us! And lots of thanks for your interest in the band!
Thanks for the interview, Koen. Many greetings to all from the Band. Something that is important to me: Stay healthy and good luck for the Release of your second Album!
